Wintering in the Algarve

Our Boutique Guesthouse-Moncarapacho in Portugal, in the east of the Algarve near Spain, has yet to be built, which means that we will be open to winter visitors from October 2025.

The winter months with us will be from October 15 to April 15. We ourselves have wonderful memories of this period. Have breakfast in the sun around 10 am and go back inside at half past four when the sun sets. Then it really gets colder and it is more comfortable inside.

Especially during these months we like to have lunch on the various terraces in Olhao, Fuseta or in our own village of Moncarapacho. Nice outside in the sun, a thick sweater is really not necessary! There are also many other people during this period of the year who enjoy the wonderful temperature and the pleasant bustle in the restaurants and shops.

Weather
Yes, of course it rains sometimes. Good for replenishing the water supply in Portugal and our Mediterranean garden. And you really need a sweater for the evening and morning, it cools down quite a bit. We haven't worn a jacket yet, but we have worn a lot of layers. At least when the sun comes out you can take off some layers! Read here about the 12 months of weather in the Algarve.

When the weather is less pleasant, there are large shopping malls in the area. But also many nice restaurants where you can enjoy tapas, Chinese or sushi in addition to delicious Portuguese dishes. It's all there.

And of course you can participate in the various activities in the area. Think of yoga, painting courses, Portuguese lessons, gym, walking trips, golf, swimming. You will also find plenty of wellness here. A wonderful massage, facial treatment or having your nails done in our village. We would be happy to make an appointment for you!

Casa Pipa long stay
Our future accommodations will be comfortably furnished and will be comfortable with underfloor heating. Casa Pipa also has a wood stove and is also a nice place to stay in colder weather. That is why we only rent this completely restored Portuguese house of 60m2 to snowbirds during the winter periods. The minimum period is 4 weeks and the maximum period is from October 15 to April 15.

Dutch club Algarve
The NCA, or Dutch Club Algarve, offers Dutch-speaking members and non-members all kinds of activities throughout the Algarve. These vary from coffee mornings, (architectural) tours through the city, beautiful organized walks, creative workshops, drinks in the most beautiful places and much more.

You can participate in this for a small fee or become a member. You can follow them on the NCA Facebook page and their website Dutch Club Algarve, among others.

Small warning
In short, if you want to escape the Dutch winter, see if wintering suits you. You can start with a month and if you like it, you can book for a longer period the following year.

Small warning in advance. Once you hibernate once, you won't want anything else! Don't wait too long before deciding. The number of accommodations for a comfortable winter here in the Algarve is not very large.

If you want to spend the winter at short notice, be sure to book an accommodation with good (underfloor) heating. Most (holiday) houses in Portugal are not set up for the winter period like we are in the Netherlands. It is often warmer outside than inside!
