Blossoming almond trees in January in the Algarve

Blog from our social media series "Wednesday breaks the week so nicely" Tip 25:
Observe the blooming almond blossoms in the Algarve, Portugal.

In the garden of Boutique Hotel Guesthouse-Moncarapacho stand several almond trees. These rustic varieties of Amendoeiras (almond trees in Portuguese) that grow in the Algarve are resistant to heat and drought, cold, and poor soils.

Every year, the “almost dead” old almond trees around the end of January transform into a white‑pink sea of flowers and suddenly become colorful, cheerful, and lively trees.

At the end of December you may already see one or a few blossoms on the bare branches of the almond tree. At least in the Algarve, where winter doesn’t exist and autumn quietly turns into spring.

When the almond trees are in full bloom in January, February, or March, it is a spectacular sight. As if there is a layer of snow on them……….

The blooming Portuguese almond trees are especially known because of an old legend. Read here for more about this romantic legend.

The almond tree is highly revered in many cultures and symbolizes hope and love and the promise of new life, as this tree is the first to bloom in many countries.

Alongside the almond blossoms, the days also get longer, and it gives a spring feeling here.

Because of the beauty of the almond trees at this time of year, several municipalities organize festivities to celebrate this change in surroundings.

When the petals fall in winter, the almonds begin to grow. The traditional way to pick almonds in Portugal is by laying a large net or cloth on the ground under the almond tree and striking the branches with a long stick, causing the almonds to fall onto the net.

In the Algarve, the almond is one of the most important ingredients for local gastronomy, especially for sweets such as marzipan, cakes, and desserts. Liqueurs are also made from it.

Besides being processed into all those delicious sweets, almonds are now also considered a “superfood” and are one of the most popular snacks worldwide because of their great health benefits.

For those who missed it, here are some photos of our almond trees. And for those who want to see the blossoms in person, make sure you are there next spring 😎
