Blossoming almond trees in January in the Algarve

Blog from our social media series “Wednesday breaks up the week so nicely” Tip 25”:
witness the almond blossoms in bloom in the Algarve, Portugal.

The rustic varieties of Amendoeiras (almond trees in Portuguese) that grow in the Algarve are resistant to heat and drought, cold and poor soils.

Every year around the end of January, the 'dead-looking' old almond trees turn into a white-pink sea of flowers and the trees suddenly change into bright, cheerful and lively trees.

At the end of December you can sometimes see one or a few flowers on the bare branches of the almond tree. At least in the Algarve, where winter does not exist and autumn quietly turns into spring.

When the almond trees are really in full bloom in January, February or March, it is a spectacular sight. Just as if there is a layer of snow on them……….

The blossoming Portuguese almond trees are mostly known by an old legend. Read more about this romantic legend here .

The almond tree is highly revered in many cultures, symbolizing hope and love and the promise of new life as it is the first tree to blossom in many countries.

At the same time as the almond blossom, the days are also getting longer and this gives the feeling of spring.

Due to the beauty of the almond trees at this time of year, some municipalities organize festivities to celebrate this change of scenery.

When the petals fall in winter, the almonds begin to grow. The traditional way to pick almonds in Portugal is to place a large net or sheet on the ground under the almond tree and beat the branches with a long stick, causing the almonds to fall onto the net.

In the Algarve, almonds are one of the main ingredients for local gastronomy and especially for sweets such as marzipan, pastries and desserts. They are also used to make liqueurs.

Besides being incorporated into all those delicious sweets, almonds are now also considered a “superfood” and are one of the most popular snacks worldwide due to their great health benefits.

For those who missed it, here are some pictures of our almond trees. And for those who want to see the blossom in real life, make sure you're there next spring😎
